A gorgeous pair of 18th-century Dutch Delft wall plaques, each hand-painted with an overflowing basket of flowers — roses, tulips, … Read more A gorgeous pair of 18th-century Dutch Delft wall plaques, each hand-painted with an overflowing basket of flowers — roses, tulips, and sunflowers in vivid blue, iron-red, yellow, and green. The shaped, scrolling frames are molded with scallop shells at the crest and corners and edged in red-and-white scrollwork, giving each piece a lively rococo silhouette that reads beautifully on a wall. Genuine antique tin-glazed Delftware, circa 1750, not a later reproduction.
Polychrome Delft like this is much less common than the familiar blue-and-white — the colored enamels took extra firings to produce, so these were ambitious pieces in their day. Hung as a pair they make a charming, colorful statement in a kitchen, dining room, or gallery wall; the flower-basket motif and warm palette work as easily with traditional blue-and-white collections as with a more eclectic, layered look. One plaque is incised with an old "H" on the reverse. A comparable example is held in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
