This stunning piece is an authentic antique Chinese bamboo curio/display cabinet. It was crafted in Southern or Southeastern China in the late 19th or early 20th century (the late Qing Dynasty to Republic period). The multi-sided open fretwork served an exact, practical purpose in a traditional southern Chinese household: ventilation. These open-air structures were designed to display delicate porcelain, store loose tea leaves, or preserve historical family scrolls, allowing natural airflow to prevent mold and moisture buildup during tropical, sultry summers.
STORAGE: The cabinet offers multiple storage compartments. The upper tier opens via two hinged doors inlaid with custom elongated clear glass panels. Traditional Chinese paktong (nickel-brass) hardware, formed as a leaf-shape pull tab and an integrated slide-bolt locking pin, secures the upper glass-fronted doors. The middle tier contains two pull-out drawers featuring a densely woven bamboo lattice facade. The lower tier has two additional hinged doors that conceal a dark, high-gloss lacquered interior shelf.
DESIGN: This piece features intricate, varied geometric latticework, or fretwork, made of split bamboo splints. The geometric patterns change beautifully across different sections: the top and bottom front doors are adorned with a classic wan-zi (swastika/infinity motif) or open cell design. The sides and back panels utilize a striking, overlapping herringbone/chevron pattern that remains open on all four sides. This open-air design was traditionally favored in southern warm climates.
CONSTRUCTION: The entire structure was meticulously constructed using dark, rich smoked bamboo poles that are notched, bent, and pinned together using traditional joinery techniques. The main uprights mimic natural bamboo nodes, adding rich organic texture to the overall silhouette.
ORIGIN: This cabinet was almost certainly crafted in Southern or Southeastern China, most likely in the Fujian, Guangdong, or Hunan provinces. Natural bamboo, the material of this cabinet, is highly sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations. In the dry, heated climates of Northern China, authentic bamboo furniture dries out, shrinks, splits, and structurally fails. Consequently, the specialized craft of bending, pinning and weaving whole bamboo was concentrated in the lush, humid southern regions where bamboo grew abundantly and the climate kept the fibers naturally conditioned.
Further, the dense geometric fretwork patterns (particularly the herringbone and swastika matrix designs on exhibit in this piece) are indicative of artisanal workshops in the coastal and southeastern regions. Fujian, in particular, is culturally celebrated for its highly technical, delicate bamboo and lacquerware storage pieces.
USES TODAY: Standing at 32" W x 14" D x 76" H, this tall, slender profile makes the cabinet exceptionally versatile for modern spaces. Because the decorative fretwork wraps entirely around the back and sides, it functions beautifully not just flush against a wall, but also out in the open as a freestanding room divider or a statement bar cabinet. As of this writing, there are two available; the twin is seen in the background of photo #3 and in a separate listing on this site.
Signature/Maker’s Mark: Nonexistent.
