An exceptionally charismatic Renaissance Revival chandelier, circa 1900, combining substantial cast bronze with three beautifully veined alabaster bowls. Probably made in Germany, this richly detailed antique possesses a remarkable sculptural presence, bringing warmth, individuality, and a sense of European history to an interior.
Its most captivating feature is the interplay between the luminous stone and the elaborate bronze work. Three gracefully curved serpents connect the suspension chains to the chandelier’s body, introducing an unexpected, expressive detail. Torch-shaped supports cradle the alabaster bowls above a richly ornamented framework, while the underside reveals figurative medallions, expressive faces, scrolling acanthus foliage, and classical decorative borders.
This beautifully composed underside is central to the chandelier’s appeal. Viewed from slightly below, the relief decoration becomes especially engaging, revealing the care devoted to a surface that simpler fixtures leave unadorned. In a room with a higher ceiling, these details can be fully appreciated, giving the chandelier an almost jewel-like presence overhead.
The three alabaster bowls are equally distinctive. Their creamy white stone is crossed by dramatic gray veining, creating individual natural patterns that are striking even when the chandelier is unlit. Once illuminated, the alabaster develops a soft, honeyed glow, emphasizing the depth of the stone and surrounding the bronze ornament with inviting warmth.
The craftsmanship continues through the substantial suspension chains to the finely decorated ceiling canopy. Its subtly pointed, scalloped perimeter creates a particularly elegant finish where the fixture meets the ceiling. These details give the entire composition a sense of unity, from the canopy to the ornamental lower finial.
Weighing approximately 19 pounds, the chandelier has impressive substance for its compact central body. The outward sweep of the alabaster bowls gives it a generous overall diameter without sacrificing its balanced proportions. Its unusually elaborate combination of serpent motifs, figurative reliefs, and luminous stone makes this a distinctive choice for collectors and thoughtfully curated interiors.
Above a dining table, in a gracious entrance hall, or within an intimate library, it offers more than illumination: it creates atmosphere. The warm light, richly textured bronze, and expressive ornament bring a sense of occasion to everyday surroundings.
The chandelier has been thoroughly inspected, carefully cleaned, and sensitively refurbished, preserving its aged patina and historic character. The bronze surfaces have been conserved with Renaissance microcrystalline wax to protect and subtly enhance their rich finish. Wiring has been renewed where necessary, including a high-quality textile-covered supply cable, and a protective earth connection has been added.
Presented in good antique condition, it retains a beautifully authentic appearance. For completeness, there is a small chip on one torch-shaped bowl support, and the lower finial sits very slightly off-axis. These minor details are discreet within the overall composition and do not detract from its exceptional decorative appeal.
The suspension contributes significantly to the chandelier’s distinctive silhouette and is best retained at its present length. Shortening may be possible through professional modification.
