Acquired from Albert F. Gordon's Tribal Arts Gallery in NYC in the early 1970s, this is a hand-carved wood "Songye Kifwebe" mask made in the Congo during the 19th Century.
It measures approximately 11.75" wide, 13.5" deep, and 24" tall.
Streaked with bands of contrasting earth-tone colors, the masculine (kilume) masks generally have a high crest, such as this one. It is said that the Kifwebe masks acted as "secret police" in favor of power in order to control individuals through sorcery. They would be worn during crucial stages of initiation ceremonies.

It has been displayed among a collection of other African masks for several decades. Any imperfections in its craftsmanship are innate, and any wear is commensurate with its age and past handling. Note there are some chips on the wood, as this is how it was originally purchased in NYC. less
