An exceptionally charming and atmospheric pair of Mediterranean style barrel-form olive jars, celebrated for their beautifully weathered patina and sculptural, architectural form.
Known traditionally as Biot jars or Olive Barrels, these vessels were once essential in farm estates across Provence, Spain, and Greece for storing oil, olives, and grain. The banded barrel silhouette, with its robust, upright form and raised horizontal ribs, offers a striking play of light and shadow and a timeless, primitive elegance.
The terracotta bodies are enveloped in a spectacular, heavily distressed verdigris finish — a dense, dry crust of moss green, sage, lichen, cream, and weathered stone that has crackled, flaked, and bloomed. As your close-up photos show, the surface is incredibly tactile and painterly, with raw terracotta peeking through where time has worn it. The thick, hand-thrown rolled rim and clean terracotta interior with drainage hole speak to its authentic artisanal origins.
Perfect as a matched pair flanking an entry, fireplace, or terrace, or as sculptural planters for olive trees, ferns, or architectural branches in a Belgian Farmhouse, Wabi-Sabi, Mediterranean, Tuscan, or Organic Modern interior and garden.
A matched pair with exceptional character and soul.
The interior opening measures 9 inches in diameter, ideal for planting or styling with dried branches.
