Each half round top rests on a gently curved apron and slender square tapered legs, giving the pair a light, airy silhouette with clean architectural lines. Built with pegged mortise and tenon joinery, the consoles carry the enduring craftsmanship of French provincial workshops, and the layered whitewash has softened into a beautiful, gently weathered patina.
The Directoire style carried the neoclassical spirit forward with a new simplicity, favoring pure geometry, graceful proportion, and restrained ornament. Its understated elegance remained a favorite of French cabinetmakers well into the 19th century, especially in the countryside, where fine form was paired with sturdy, practical construction.
Placed on either side of a doorway, a fireplace, or a window, the pair brings classic symmetry to an entry, living room, or hallway. Beneath a pair of mirrors or sconces, topped with lamps, urns, or a collection of ironstone, they suit a Country French, coastal, Swedish inspired, or transitional interior with equal ease.
Circa early 19th century.
Each measures 28H x 35.5W x 16.5D
