Bold acanthus scrolls rise at each corner, gather into shell motifs, and sweep down into powerful scrolled feet that give the commode a true sculptural presence. A shaped and molded top follows the graceful curves below.
Three drawers are framed with gadrooned borders and centered with carved interlacing foliate scrolls. A shaped apron with a central shell completes the front, and recessed panel sides carry the craftsmanship around the entire case.
Late 19th century Italy saw a flowering of revival styles, as master carvers drew on their country's Baroque heritage and the playful elegance of French Rococo to create furniture of remarkable artistry. Walnut, long prized by Italian cabinetmakers, was chosen for its depth of color and its ability to hold crisp, fine carving.
Place beneath a gilded mirror in an entry or dining room, or use as a statement chest in a primary bedroom, where the carving can be admired up close. Equally striking in a traditional setting or as a single sculptural accent in a more tailored interior.
Circa early 1900s
