An exceptional and increasingly rare Victorian transforming child’s high chair, dating to the late 19th century and featuring an ingenious mechanical conversion system characteristic of the inventive nursery furniture produced during the period. Far more elaborate than a conventional high chair, the piece incorporates an articulated wooden frame and mechanical understructure allowing it to be configured into several different positions, including a traditional elevated high chair, lower nursery or feeding chair and rocking chair configuration. The exposed mechanism beneath is particularly fascinating, comprising articulated supports, stretchers, wheels and pivoting components that give the chair an almost sculptural appearance. The conversion mechanism remains operational and provides a wonderful demonstration of Victorian mechanical furniture design and craftsmanship. Constructed predominantly from solid wood, the chair features a decorative carved crest rail above a gallery of turned spindles, shaped supports, an aged wooden seat and the original-style rocking and wheeled understructure. The timber has developed a rich colour and established patina through generations of use. Today, the piece has considerable appeal as a collectible example of Victorian nursery furniture, as well as an unusual decorative object for a country house, period nursery display, museum-style collection, photography studio, theatre or film production. Presented in good antique condition considering its considerable age. The structure remains solid and the transforming mechanism operates, with expected historic scratches, marks, rubbing, surface wear and imperfections throughout. The worn seat and aged surfaces have been retained as part of the chair's authentic character. Due to its age and antique construction, it is best regarded as a decorative or collectible piece rather than modern child-safety furniture. Material Solid wood with metal mechanical fittings and cast wheels
