The young figure is shown seated with one knee raised prominently toward the viewer, his head lowered and his weight supported by an outstretched arm. The unusual perspective creates a strong sculptural quality, while the foreshortening of the limbs demonstrates Smedley's confident understanding of anatomy and the human form. Executed through dense, energetic linework and extensive cross-hatching, the composition combines dark linear passages with warm sepia and brown tonal areas. Smedley builds the figure through repeated expressive marks rather than smooth modelling, producing a richly textured surface and giving the work a distinctly modern figurative character. The surrounding background is similarly worked with vigorous intersecting lines, allowing the lighter areas of the body to emerge dramatically from the darker setting. The result combines the observational qualities of traditional life drawing with a more expressive late 20th-century approach. The work is signed and dated “Smedley 1987” to the lower right, providing a precise date for the composition. Born in Nottingham in 1922, Joseph Smedley developed a diverse artistic practice encompassing portraiture, figure and nude studies, abstraction, architecture, animals and local subjects. His work was exhibited in Britain and internationally, including London, Lincoln, New York and Germany. A compelling example of Smedley's exploration of the male figure and an attractive addition to a collection of British Modernist, figurative or life-drawing works.
