A fine quality 19th-century high-grade silver teapot and matching sucrier, richly decorated with hand-chased repoussé work and displaying a fascinating combination of Eastern craftsmanship and Scottish heraldic associations. Both pieces are extensively worked with elaborate floral and stylised motifs executed in repoussé and chasing, creating a richly textured surface characteristic of luxury silverwork produced for affluent patrons during the 19th century. Ornamental gadrooned borders provide additional definition and refinement. Particularly distinctive are the naturalistically modelled serpentine handles, possibly intended to represent cobras.
Their sinuous forms introduce an exotic sculptural element and contribute to the possible Indian or broader Islamic influence of the design. Both the teapot and sucrier are engraved with a heraldic crest depicting a boar’s head above the Latin motto “Ne Obliviscaris,” meaning “Forget Not.” The boar’s head traditionally represents courage and hospitality, while the motto and crest are associated with Clan Campbell, headed by the Duke of Argyll in Scotland. The juxtaposition of Scottish heraldry with elaborate Eastern-inspired silverwork suggests the pieces may have been commissioned for or owned by someone with connections between Britain and the Indian subcontinent. The pieces are unmarked, and their precise origin remains uncertain. Stylistically, the workmanship suggests a possible Indian origin, potentially influenced by Kutch, Persian or wider Islamic decorative traditions. A particularly intriguing and highly decorative 19th-century silver tea service, combining elaborate repoussé craftsmanship, sculptural serpentine handles and historically significant heraldic decoration.
