Dating to the reign of george v, the pair is executed in the georgian style and combines traditional english proportions with substantial solid silver craftsmanship. Each sauce boat is formed with a gracefully curved body and elegant pouring lip, creating the balanced silhouette associated with classic georgian table silver. The polished surfaces allow the natural lustre of the sterling silver to remain the principal decorative feature, giving the pair a refined and timeless appearance. The georgian-inspired design reflects the continued popularity of 18th-century forms among accomplished british silversmiths during the early 20th century. Their matched appearance, combined with slightly differing hallmark dates, suggests a service assembled or supplemented over a short period. Stokes & ireland ltd. Was an established british silver manufacturer, and the combination of identifiable maker, london assay marks and solid silver construction gives the pair particular appeal to collectors of english tableware. The pieces are documented as solid silver and date from 1912 and 1915. Elegant enough for formal dining yet highly decorative when displayed, the pair would make an attractive addition to a collection of antique silver, george v tableware or georgian revival decorative arts.
