Very well made and of fine quality, this attractive chest has considerable decorative appeal, with its distinctive serpentine form and richly figured burr oak creating a particularly refined and characterful appearance. The chest is fitted with four useful drawers to the front, providing convenient storage despite the relatively small dimensions of the piece. Each drawer retains its original decorative brass handles, providing an attractive traditional detail and beautifully complementing the rich warm tones of the burr oak. The gracefully flowing serpentine front is one of the defining features of the design, giving the chest an elegant sculptural quality and distinguishing it from more conventional straight-fronted examples. The chest is raised on shaped bracket feet enhanced with decorative stud detailing, providing an attractive finishing touch and reinforcing the traditional character of the piece. The burr oak is particularly striking, displaying beautiful natural figuring, gorgeous grain, rich warm colouring and considerable tonal variation throughout. The distinctive swirling patterns within the timber give the chest exceptional depth and visual interest. At only 46 cm wide and 37 cm deep, the chest has exceptionally useful compact proportions while its four-drawer configuration provides impressive storage capacity for its size. Its combination of richly figured burr oak, elegant serpentine form, four practical drawers, original decorative brass handles and shaped studded bracket feet makes this a particularly attractive example of traditional 20th-century furniture. Presented in good vintage condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 20th-century origin.
