The figure is presented frontally with one knee raised and the opposite leg extending toward the foreground, creating an engaging sense of depth and foreshortening. Smedley's confident handling of the human form is particularly evident in the modelling of the torso, limbs and musculature, balancing careful anatomical observation with an expressive approach to line and tone. Executed predominantly in dark charcoal or chalk with contrasting white highlights on warm-toned paper, the drawing has a wonderfully tactile quality. Smedley uses dense passages of hatching and shading to establish the surrounding interior, allowing the lighter areas of the figure to emerge dramatically from the darker background. The restrained monochromatic palette gives the work a distinctly Modernist character, while the vigorous mark-making and simplified treatment of the face place the emphasis firmly upon form, posture and the interaction between light and shadow. The work is signed “J. Smedley” to the lower right. Born in Nottingham in 1922, Joseph Smedley developed a diverse artistic practice encompassing portraiture, abstraction, conceptual works, nude and figure studies, animals, architecture and local subjects. He held an honours degree in fine art and exhibited his work in Britain and internationally, including at the Royal Academy in London as well as exhibitions in Germany and New York. A strong example of Smedley's lifelong exploration of the human figure and an appealing work for collectors of British Modernist, figurative and life-drawing art.
