Executed in oil on board, the work is a finely observed study characteristic of wheeler's specialist interest in dogs, horses and british sporting life. Working predominantly on private commissions, wheeler developed a reputation for accurately portraying individual animals, particularly prized dogs and racehorses. The intimate scale of the painting enhances its appeal as a traditional victorian animal portrait. Wheeler's careful handling and attention to the character and anatomy of his subjects reflect the established british sporting tradition in which the wheeler family worked throughout the 19th century. The painting is monogrammed “a w” at the lower right and presented in a decorative frame. About alfred wheeler alfred wheeler (1852–1932) was a british sporting and animal painter born in bath, somerset. He was the second son of the noted sporting artist john alfred wheeler (1821–1877) and brother of painter james thomas wheeler. Alfred worked in his father's studio at hanwell, both before and after his father's death, and specialised principally in horses and dogs. The close stylistic similarities between members of the wheeler family can sometimes make attribution challenging. Throughout his career wheeler used several forms of signature, including a. Wheeler junior, j. Wheeler junior and j. A. Wheeler, as well as his own name and monograms. Much of his work was produced for private patrons, and his equestrian subjects included portraits of notable racehorses and derby winners. Among these was persimmon, winner of the 1896 derby. Wheeler exhibited at the royal academy, and examples of his sporting paintings have subsequently appeared at major british and international auctions.
