A rare and highly decorative Augarten Wien Art Deco porcelain cabinet vase, Vienna, dating to approximately 1934–1940, featuring a beautifully painted continuous frieze of stylised galloping horses within a colourful landscape. The globular form provides an exceptional canvas for the animated equestrian decoration. Multiple horses are depicted in movement, with expressive faces, flowing manes and elongated, stylised forms. The surrounding landscape is rendered in rich greens, blues, reds, yellows and greys, giving the composition considerable depth and visual movement. The neck is particularly distinctive, decorated with a blue stippled ground beneath a broad gilded rim, while the lower section is finished with a warm brown-toned foot. The combination of the unusual globular shape, bold animal decoration and restrained Art Deco geometry gives the vase a particularly strong decorative presence. The decoration is attributed to Franz von Zülow (1883–1963), an important Austrian artist and designer whose work incorporated imaginative animals, landscapes and highly stylised decorative compositions. The spirited horses and flowing forms seen here are strongly characteristic of the decorative language associated with his work for Augarten. The underside is marked with the Augarten Wien shield, together with the painted factory numbers: Form No. 511 Pattern No. 5189 Decorator No. 52 These markings provide important information regarding the manufacture and decoration of the vase and support the identification as an Augarten piece of this period.
A particularly attractive example for a collector of Augarten porcelain, Austrian Art Deco, Franz von Zülow, equestrian art or fine European decorative porcelain. Its relatively compact cabinet size also makes it suitable for display within a curated collection, library, study or cabinet.
