A superb and highly decorative 19th-century English Victorian writing table, beautifully constructed in oak and distinguished by extensive carved detailing, barley-twist supports and a green leather writing surface concealing useful internal storage. The table is richly carved throughout, with intricate decorative detailing giving the piece considerable visual depth and demonstrating the quality of the craftsmanship involved in its construction. The top is inset with an attractive green leather writing surface, providing a comfortable and traditional workspace. Particularly appealing is the lift-up design of the top, which opens to reveal a useful concealed storage compartment beneath, combining elegant presentation with practical functionality. A small raised gallery to the rear provides an additional architectural detail while enhancing the traditional character of the writing table. The piece is raised on distinctive barley-twist legs, a particularly striking feature of the design, united by a supportive stretcher that provides both structural stability and further decorative interest. Throughout, the oak displays beautiful natural grain, rich warm colouring and an established patina, complementing the green leather and elaborate carved surfaces particularly well.
with a generous 63.5 cm knee height and an 86 cm wide writing surface, the table provides a practical workspace while retaining compact and highly versatile proportions. It would make an impressive addition to a study, library, home office, bedroom or drawing room.
Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its 19th-century origin. A particularly desirable example of Victorian furniture, combining extensive carved decoration, a green leather writing surface, concealed lift-top storage, raised gallery and elegant barley-twist supports within an exceptionally characterful and practical design.
