The bowl is fitted with a pair of entwined rococo-style loop handles, while the matching domed lid is crowned with a spiral-moulded finial. The exterior surfaces of both lid and bowl are adorned with elaborate jewelled enamelling. Raised white enamel petals encircle vivid orange-red centres to create stylised flowerheads, accented by suspended chains of gilded foliage and white beaded teardrops. Fine gilded scrollwork and borders frame the shaped rims, standing out crisply against the dark blue ground. Underneath the foot, the bowl bears a printed green Coalport crown backstamp alongside a British diamond registration mark dating the design to 3 January 1872. Painted pattern number B2233 is inscribed in black enamel alongside an old inventory mark CP 313 and an adhering circular collection label, corresponding to its previous display history at the Coalport Museum. While occasionally catalogued as a covered cup, the broad, two-handled form functions as an écuelle, broth bowl, or lidded sugar vessel. Across the handles it measures approximately 16.5 cm wide, with a bowl diameter of roughly 12 cm and an overall height of around 11.5 cm to the top of the lid finial. See less
