A 19th century Louis XV style bombe commode crafted from solid oak, revealed in a soft stripped finish that glows with the warmth of age. The swelling serpentine case curves at the front and sides, crowned by a shaped top of gray marble with dramatic white veining. Cast bronze pulls of scrolling acanthus are paired with cartouche escutcheons of intertwined foliage, all in a mellow aged patina whose deep tones echo the gray of the stone and the warmth of the oak.
The bombe form calls for exceptional skill, as every drawer front and side panel must be shaped to follow the sweeping contour of the case. Molded panels frame the sides, and a scalloped apron carved with a central rosette and scrolling acanthus flows into cabriole legs with carved knees and scrolled toes. Our own workshop stripping process has revealed the natural grain of the solid oak while preserving the patina earned over generations.
Crafted during the 19th century revival of all French styles, the commode celebrates the refined legacy of French furniture making, reviving and reinterpreting the Rococo spirit of the Louis XV period with its sensuous curves, nature inspired ornament, and joyful asymmetry.
Placed in an entry beneath a gilded mirror, at the foot of a bed, or along a living room wall, the soft oak, patinated bronze, and gray marble bring timeless elegance to traditional rooms and modern interiors with a neutral palette alike.
