This vintage set of two carved figures reduces the human and primate form to bold, simplified geometry, each shaped from a dark, richly grained hardwood with a hand-rubbed, softly lustrous finish. The taller figure stands with a long, columnar torso, elongated arms hanging straight at its sides, and a stern, wedge-shaped face with a pronounced nose and downturned mouth. The shorter figure is more compact and seated, with a broad, rounded chest, a gently smiling mouth, and thick limbs that end in chiseled, notched hands and feet. Both heads are smooth, rounded domes that taper toward the chin, and each face is lit by small round inlays of pale mother-of-pearl set into the eyes, creating a startling, watchful gaze against the deep mahogany tone. The grain runs vertically through both bodies, with fine streaks and subtle tonal shifts adding depth. Tool marks remain visible along the edges and in the fingers and toes, confirming the handcrafted construction. The contrast between the two figures, one tall and solemn and the other low and good-humored, gives the pair a playful, narrative character.
Display these figures on a bookshelf, console, mantel, or coffee table, where their sculptural silhouettes pair well with ceramics, books, and warm wood furnishings. They complement Mid-Century Modern, Organic Modern, Boho, Scandinavian Modern, and Eclectic interiors. To care for them, dust with a soft, dry cloth, occasionally buff with a light application of wood conditioner or furniture wax, and avoid water, harsh chemicals, and prolonged direct sunlight or heat that could dry the wood. Each figure measures approximately 2.25 inches (57 mm) wide, 1.5 inches (38 mm) deep, and 7 inches (178 mm) high. Offered in very good vintage condition, the set retains its original finish with a rich patina, minor surface scuffs and slight edge wear, and is structurally sound with no visible repairs or losses.
