The slender backs and the cream seats give them a refined, classical look. Neoclassicism rose in the later 18th century after the excavations at Pompeii and Herculaneum, favoring columns, urns, straight lines and the proportions of antiquity, a taste that lasted well into the 19th century. Age-appropriate wear and a soft patina speak to a long and honest working life. It brings warmth and character to a seating group and rewards the person who sits down in it. See less
