The stand depicts a small boy climbing the trunk of a tree towards a bird's nest, where a robin is shown seated within the nest. The composition is sensitively carved, with the naturalistic tree form providing both the structural and decorative framework of the piece. The sculptural treatment of the boy, tree and nesting bird gives the torchère an engaging narrative quality, while the warm character of the country oak enhances the depth and definition of the hand-carved details. An unusual example of Victorian figural furniture, combining practical use as a plant or display stand with the character of a decorative carved sculpture. Presented in good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and historic use consistent with its period and origin.
