Constructed principally from beech and pine with brass detailing, the original canoe framework has been ingeniously repurposed to accommodate three substantial display shelves. The exposed ribs and structural members remain an integral part of the design, preserving the distinctive construction and elegant elongated profile of the original vessel. Standing an impressive 234 cm high, the piece has considerable sculptural presence. Its combination of maritime history, exposed timber construction and functional shelving makes it particularly appealing as both furniture and a decorative conversation piece. The canoe is associated with the type of collapsible craft promoted and designed during the period by British canoeing figure Percy Blandford, although without surviving documentation a direct attribution to Blandford himself cannot be confirmed. The later conversion into shelving gives the original canoe structure a new architectural purpose while retaining its unmistakable nautical character. The three shelves provide practical space for books, decorative objects or retail display. An exceptionally characterful piece suitable for a coastal or country interior, large entrance hall, library, hospitality environment or distinctive retail display. Presented in good vintage condition with appropriate marks, wear and patination consistent with the age and previous use of the original canoe structure.
