Combining practical desk use with playful figural decoration, the piece is characteristic of the imaginative novelty objects produced around the turn of the 20th century. The rectangular brass box is fitted with a hinged lid that opens to reveal two internal compartments, designed for separating postage stamps of different denominations. Such small accessories were intended for the writing desk or bureau at a time when handwritten correspondence formed an important part of everyday social and business life. The seated bear is particularly appealing, with expressive facial features, textured fur and carefully modelled details giving the figure considerable character despite its compact scale. The warm aged surface of the brass further enhances its decorative quality. Presented in good antique condition. The hinge operates smoothly, with surface wear, rubbing and mellow patination throughout consistent with age and historic use. No visible breaks or repairs.
