The Savonarola form takes its name from the type of folding chair traditionally associated with the Italian Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola and examples preserved in Florence. During the 19th century, the historic form was revived as part of the broader interest in Renaissance and Gothic-inspired furniture. Constructed from country oak with a medium oak colour, this example retains the characteristic folding construction, allowing the chair to collapse for carrying or storage. The seat has recently been reupholstered using an Aztec-patterned rug textile, introducing a distinctive decorative contrast against the oak frame. A characterful example of Victorian historicist furniture, combining the traditional Savonarola folding form with Gothic Revival influence and substantial country oak construction.
