The inverted baluster-form body is richly decorated in the traditional Arita palette of underglaze cobalt blue and iron red, enhanced with finely applied gilt detailing. The decoration is arranged across four principal panels, two depicting garden scenes with chrysanthemums and trellis fencing, while the remaining panels feature the mythical Ho-Ho bird flying above a flowering cherry tree. The Ho-Ho bird, often compared with the Western phoenix, carries important symbolic significance within Japanese decorative arts and contributes considerable visual character to this early example. Japanese Arita porcelain of the late 17th century was produced during a period of significant European demand for Asian ceramics. Following disruptions to Chinese porcelain exports during the transition from the Ming to Qing dynasties, Japanese kilns became an increasingly important source of luxury export porcelain. An impressive and increasingly scarce example of early Edo-period Japanese Arita porcelain, combining strong architectural form with richly coloured and symbolic decoration.
