Measuring an impressive 37 cm in diameter, the charger is distinguished by its extraordinarily intricate geometric decoration, executed within a restrained yet striking palette of creamy glaze, iron-oxide red and fine gold gilding. The surface is densely painted with highly detailed geometric and ornamental patterns, demonstrating the considerable precision and skill required of the artist. The complexity and symmetry of the composition create an almost textile-like appearance, with decorative qualities reminiscent of patterns subsequently associated with fine Japanese porcelain, including later Fukagawa wares. The reverse has been treated with equal attention. Cherry blossoms and stylised acanthus leaves surround the foot rim, ensuring that the decoration continues across both sides of the piece. The charger bears a "Dai Nippon Kutani" signature. Aka-e refers to the exceptionally fine iron-red decoration associated with particularly detailed Kutani porcelain. Here, the technique is employed extensively across the charger, complemented by gilded elements that add richness and depth to the intricate composition. Its substantial scale further enhances the visual impact of the decoration. At nearly 15 inches in diameter and approximately 7 cm deep, this is both a significant collector's piece and an impressive decorative object.
