Exceptionally heavy at approximately 7.6 kg, the work combines richly layered sand-cast glass with an iridescent dark blue base to create a dramatic sculptural centrepiece. The sweeping upper composition is formed from thick clear glass incorporating an extraordinary array of black, deep purple, burgundy and pink inclusions. Linear elements rise through the glass like branches or slender trees, while fragmented areas of colour appear suspended within the transparent body. The effect changes considerably according to the direction and intensity of the surrounding light. Viewed closely, the sculptural outline can also suggest the silhouettes of two elephants, possibly a mother and calf, lending a subtle figurative quality to an otherwise abstract composition. The imagery remains deliberately open to interpretation, with the internal black lines and organic forms equally evocative of a woodland landscape or forest canopy. The transparent sculptural element is mounted upon a substantial rounded base of intensely coloured dark blue glass with an iridescent finish. Its smooth, highly polished surface provides a striking visual counterpoint to the complex textures and inclusions of the sand-cast upper section. Malcolm is closely associated with the historic glassmaking centre of Stourbridge in the English West Midlands and is known for combining traditional glassmaking processes with contemporary abstract forms. Sand casting involves pouring molten glass into a prepared sand mould, allowing the artist to build layers of colour, frit and other decorative elements into a thick sculptural body. The process frequently produces unique variations, making individual works inherently distinctive. Created circa 2008, this large-scale example demonstrates Malcolm's interest in treating glass almost as a three-dimensional canvas, balancing transparency, colour, texture and reflected light. Its considerable scale and weight give the work a commanding physical presence, making it particularly effective as a console, pedestal or tabletop centrepiece in a contemporary interior.
