A substantial early 18th-century bombé chest of drawers, dating from circa 1730–1740 and constructed from walnut with a shaped marble … Read more A substantial early 18th-century bombé chest of drawers, dating from circa 1730–1740 and constructed from walnut with a shaped marble top. The chest has a pronounced bombé form and is arranged with four graduated drawers. Traditional tongue-and-groove construction is used throughout, while the original back remains in place. The drawers are fitted with elaborate antique brass handles. These are later replacements rather than the original fittings, as are the locks. No key is present. The chest stands on elegant hand-carved cabriole legs, complementing the curving profile of the case. The shaped marble top displays attractive black, white and grey figuring. It has some chips and small losses consistent with age and has undergone a professional repair, which is principally visible from underneath. Presented in good antique condition, the chest remains sturdy and displays knocks, marks, small losses and general wear consistent with its considerable age and historic use.
