Crafted in porcelain, this small brush pot is richly decorated with vibrant overglaze enamels and gilt detailing. The reticulated body incorporates finely painted panels depicting birds, plants, flowers and butterflies, alternating with elaborate palace scenes showing groups of courtiers attending one of the Emperor's consorts within palace gardens. The decorative treatment belongs to the Famille Rose tradition and is also associated with Canton ware. Pieces of this type were produced principally as Chinese export porcelain for European and American markets. Its combination of reticulated porcelain, detailed figural painting, colourful enamelling and gilding makes this a particularly decorative example of early 19th-century Qing dynasty porcelain. The piece has undergone restoration which is described as extremely difficult to detect.
