Although the chair bears the date 1715, its construction and design indicate that it was made considerably later, during the 19th-century Gothic Revival. The earlier date forms part of the decorative character of the piece rather than being presented as its date of manufacture. The imposing high back is enriched with hand-carved garlands and foliage, complemented by elegantly scrolled arms. The chair stands on sturdy stile feet, reinforcing its architectural Gothic character. An unusual feature is the incorporation of a practical drawer beneath the seat, retaining its original brass handle. Standing over four feet high, this is an impressive and highly decorative example of Victorian Gothic Revival seating with considerable presence.
