The cylindrical body is exceptionally finely carved and pierced with a continuous landscape composition depicting two female courtiers within a mountainous lodge setting. Its intricate reticulated construction is both decorative and functional, allowing the fragrance and smoke from burning incense to escape through the pierced surface of the bamboo. The piece retains a removable top and base and displays particularly attractive original colour and patination developed naturally over centuries. Objects of this type were associated with the Chinese scholar's studio, where finely carved bamboo pieces were appreciated for the skill of their workmanship as well as their practical and contemplative functions. The seller notes a stylistic comparison with carved bamboo work associated with Zhu Sansong and identifies the piece broadly with the Ming/Qing tradition, while dating it most probably to the 17th or 18th century. It remains in excellent condition according to the listing.
