The distinctive double-sphere body is formed … Read more A rare late 19th-century French double-gourd soda syphon, or Seltzogene, dating to circa 1890. The distinctive double-sphere body is formed from hand-blown glass and enclosed within its protective wire mesh casing. The pewter tap bears the maker's inscription “Véritable Seltzogène D Fevre Paris 5,” together with an engraved signature to the neck. Originally, the lower chamber contained water while the upper chamber accommodated the compounds required to produce carbonation. The naturally aged and patinated wirework provides considerable character, making this an unusual surviving example of late 19th-century French barware and an excellent decorative object for a bar or kitchen.
