Livens & co., circa 1907 material: tinplate a wonderfully characterful edwardian novelty tin money box produced for w. M. Livens & co. Of newcastle-upon-tyne, dating to circa 1907. Formed in the distinctive shape of a gentleman’s top hat, the piece was originally conceived as a dual-purpose confectionery container and money box. The factory-formed coin slot to the underside forms part of its original construction rather than representing a later alteration. The tin retains its period “college” branding and illustrated decoration, while the sculptural top-hat form gives the piece considerable decorative appeal beyond its original commercial function. It is an engaging example of early 20th century british packaging, advertising and novelty design. Surviving examples are particularly appealing when retaining their original form and decoration, as seen here. More than a century after its manufacture, the piece remains an attractive collectible associated with edwardian retail and confectionery history. Presented in good antique condition for its age, with surface wear, scratches and areas of paint loss consistent with historic use. There is no apparent structural damage, and the piece displays very well.
