Crafted in porcelain, the dish features vibrant and highly detailed overglaze enamel decoration enriched with gilding. The composition incorporates panels of birds, flowering plants and butterflies alternating with finely painted palace scenes depicting groups of courtiers attending one of the Emperor's consorts in palace gardens. The elaborate decoration is characteristic of the Rose Medallion and Famille Rose traditions and is also frequently associated with Canton ware. Porcelain of this type was produced principally for export to Europe and the United States during the 19th century. The combination of detailed figural scenes, botanical motifs, colourful enamelling and gilt decoration creates a particularly rich example of Qing dynasty export porcelain.
