The mirror is designed with an elaborate temple-inspired crest rising above a small central mirror plate. The surrounding frame is extensively decorated with delicate hand-painted floral ornament, creating a richly detailed surface characteristic of Kashmiri decorative craftsmanship of the period. Kashmiri decorative arts developed through a distinctive combination of indigenous traditions with Persian, Central Asian and Mughal influences. Painted objects frequently incorporated highly detailed botanical motifs inspired by the landscape of the Kashmir Valley, including stylised flowers, leaves and scrolling foliage. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Kashmiri craftsmen produced an extensive range of highly decorative objects for both domestic and export markets. Mirrors of this type combined functional mirror glass with the elaborate painted ornament traditionally associated with Kashmiri craftsmanship. The mirror remains in good antique condition and retains its original decorative artwork, with appropriate signs of age and historic use contributing to its character and authenticity. Its slender proportions and highly decorative architectural silhouette make it an attractive accent mirror for a bedroom, hallway or eclectic interior, as well as an appealing decorative display piece.
