Of distinctly utilitarian construction, the stool appears to have been individually made or adapted for use by a factory employee, potentially to assist with a particular task along the production line. Its straightforward construction and wonderfully naive character embody the practical ingenuity associated with historic British industrial workplaces. Particularly appealing is the name “Stella,” roughly hand-painted across the back. This personal detail gives the stool an individual identity and provides an evocative connection with its working life. The wooden surfaces have developed a rich and authentic patina through prolonged use, displaying the marks, wear and variations in finish that would be expected from a functional piece of factory furniture. Its reputed association with the Raleigh Bicycle Factory adds an interesting element of British industrial and cycling history. As this provenance is based on received history rather than documentary evidence, the Raleigh association should be regarded as reputed rather than definitively established. Presented in sound vintage condition with no notable structural issues or significant damage. Surface wear, marks and patination are consistent with its utilitarian construction and historic use.
