A superb original Art Nouveau early electric pendant lamp, combining bright copper and wrought iron with three original glass shades … Read more A superb original Art Nouveau early electric pendant lamp, combining bright copper and wrought iron with three original glass shades and an ingenious pulley-wheel system allowing the height to be adjusted. The lamp displays the flowing, organic lines characteristic of late Art Nouveau design. The contrast between the warm polished copper, dark wrought iron and three glass shades creates an exceptionally decorative composition, while the exposed pulley mechanism forms an integral part of the overall design. Currently configured with an overall drop of approximately 170 cm, the pulley arrangement allows the lamp to be adjusted to provide a shorter drop if required. At approximately 62 cm across at its widest point, it has substantial scale and considerable presence when suspended. Early electric lighting of this quality represented both technological modernity and luxury at the turn of the 20th century. Elaborately designed electrical fittings would have been particularly appropriate for sophisticated and fashionable interiors embracing the new technology. The lamp has been rewired with modern fittings and cabling while retaining the appearance and character of the original historical installation. Possibly of Dutch or Belgian manufacture and possibly attributable to Winkelman & Van der Bijl. An impressive statement lighting piece combining early electrical design, original glass shades, an unusual adjustable pulley mechanism and the distinctive flowing aesthetic of the Art Nouveau period.
