Ingeniously designed to hold a single match upright, the mechanical system allows the match to be struck by snapping the lid closed, bringing it into contact with the integral steel striker plate. The lid is gilt stamped “LIGHT,” an appealing detail that remains visible despite the naturally developed surface wear from decades of handling. Compact and tactile, the piece represents an interesting transitional form of personal smoking accessory, combining the traditional match with a purpose-built mechanical ignition system. The oxblood leather covering has developed an attractive aged patina while retaining much of its original character. The mechanism remains functional, with good spring tension, a working hinge and functioning striker. Presented in good vintage condition, with light surface wear and patination consistent with age and historic use.
