The monkey is charmingly modelled wearing a hat and retains its glass eyes, giving the figure considerable personality and sculptural presence. The animal holds a small brass table designed as a practical match holder and striker, combining whimsical carving with functional Victorian smoking-related design. The detailed carving, contrasting brass element and unusual subject make this an appealing example of 19th century novelty decorative art and a particularly distinctive addition to a collection of Black Forest carvings, smoking accessories or folk art. Presented in excellent antique condition, with only minor wear to the extremities consistent with age and historic use.
