The tray is richly decorated with an intricate composition incorporating peacocks, dragons and water lilies, creating a highly detailed surface inspired by traditional Japanese naturalistic and mythological imagery. The combination of birds, floral elements and dragons gives the piece considerable visual depth and decorative character. Made from antimony, the tray demonstrates the detailed relief work associated with Japanese decorative metalware produced during this period. The piece appears to be unsigned. Its compact proportions make it suitable both as a functional serving piece and, particularly, as a decorative object for display within a collection of Japanese Meiji-period metalwork. Presented in superb antique condition for its age, with only minor wear to the extremities consistent with historic use.
