Crafted in porcelain, the dish is richly decorated with vibrant overglaze enamels and gilding. Its elaborate composition features panels of birds, plants, flowers and butterflies alternating with finely painted palace scenes depicting groups of courtiers attending one of the Emperor's consorts within palace gardens. The decoration belongs to the Famille Rose and Rose Medallion tradition, also associated with Canton ware, which was produced extensively for the European and American export markets. The unusual square format enhances the decorative quality of the piece and distinguishes it from the more commonly encountered circular forms. The piece is in good condition with a possible small restoration to one corner which is described as almost invisible.
