Standing an imposing 60 cm high, the vase is richly decorated in the classic Arita palette of deep cobalt blue and iron-red glaze, complemented by extensive gilding and colourful overglaze enamels. The elaborate decoration incorporates cartouches depicting elegantly dressed female courtiers within garden settings surrounded by flowering peonies. Further panels present a particularly dramatic composition of the mythical Ho-Ho or phoenix bird observed by a majestic green sea dragon emerging from foaming waves. Additional decorative elements include black-tipped cranes, geometric borders and abundant flowering peonies, creating a densely ornamented surface typical of high-impact Japanese export porcelain of the period. with its substantial scale, vibrant colouring and highly decorative mythological imagery, the vase has considerable presence as a statement piece for a sophisticated interior. The seller notes several original firing marks and small glaze indentations resulting from the manufacturing process rather than subsequent damage.
