Material: Solid Oak, Wrought Iron An exceptional and unusually large antique refectory dining table, combining an early solid oak tabletop dating from circa 1800 or earlier with a later wrought iron base believed to be Spanish and dating from circa 1870. The substantial oak top measures an impressive 279 cm in length and displays a wealth of historic character accumulated through generations of use. Its richly aged surface, natural variations, marks and patination form an integral part of the table's appearance and provide a tangible sense of its considerable history. The early oak top is supported by a later wrought iron base of particularly substantial construction and quality. Believed to be Spanish and dating from the latter part of the 19th century, the ironwork creates a striking architectural contrast with the warm tones and aged surface of the oak. The combination of elements from different periods gives this table an individual character and imposing presence. At almost 2.8 metres long, it would make an impressive centrepiece for a large dining room, country house or substantial contemporary interior. Presented in good antique condition, with extensive patination, marks, wear and other evidence of historic use consistent with the considerable age of the tabletop. The base is a later addition.
