The fall-front opens to create a generously proportioned writing surface at a comfortable desk height of 77 cm. Particularly interesting are the folding front supports, which extend as the bureau is opened to provide additional support beneath the writing surface. This clever arrangement combines practical engineering with an unusual and visually engaging design. Behind the fall front is a thoughtfully fitted interior incorporating compartments for organising correspondence, stationery, documents and writing accessories. Two small drawers are incorporated into the front, providing additional concealed storage and retaining their original handles. The bureau also retains its key, preserving an attractive element of its period character. The piece is raised upon finely turned legs united by a substantial supporting stretcher, reflecting the Jacobean Revival influence while providing excellent strength and stability. Particularly appealing is the oak itself, displaying pronounced natural grain and attractive figuring throughout. Rich, warm colour and an appealing aged patina give the timber considerable depth and beautifully complement the traditional design. Very well constructed and presented in very good antique condition, with appropriate signs of age and use consistent with its early 20th-century origin. The ingenious folding supports are a particularly appealing feature, setting this bureau apart from more conventional examples. Combined with its fitted interior, compact proportions and Jacobean-inspired construction, they make this a highly distinctive and functional piece of early 20th-century furniture. At only 77 cm wide, the bureau provides a dedicated writing area and organised storage within a remarkably compact footprint, making it particularly suitable for a study, library, bedroom or sophisticated country-house interior.
