Constructed from country oak with a rich medium to dark oak colour, the table has an impressive square top measuring 54.5 inches across. The writing surface is inset with green leather, finished with an ornate gilt-tooled border. The table is fitted with four functional drawers, comprising two larger and two smaller drawers, together with two dummy drawers. The drawer fronts are enriched with carved lion-head handles, garlands and floral decoration, adding a strong sculptural quality to the substantial architectural form. Further detailing includes turned stretchers beneath the table. The piece retains its original handles and original castors. The top can be unscrewed, allowing the table to separate into two sections for transportation. A substantial and finely detailed example of 19th-century English library furniture by Gillows of Lancaster, combining generous proportions, carved decoration and a traditional leather writing surface.
