Crafted from country oak, the table displays traditional period construction throughout, including pegged and dovetailed joints, rosehead nails and old metal hinges. The aged oak has developed an attractive natural character and patina. The table incorporates an unusual extending top. The upper section lifts, folds down and can then be pushed forward, increasing the length from approximately 23 inches to 46 inches when fully extended. This practical transformation provides a considerably larger surface while allowing the table to remain relatively compact when closed. The heraldic decoration gives the piece additional visual and historical interest. The crest is represented as associated with the Duke of Devonshire; no documentary provenance establishing ownership by the Devonshire family has been provided.
