The original composition, dating from the 16th century, depicts Saint Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, asleep while experiencing a vision associated with the True Cross. According to Christian tradition, Helena subsequently travelled to Jerusalem, where she was credited with discovering the cross upon which Christ was crucified. Produced in the early 20th century, this decorative interpretation reflects the continuing fascination with Renaissance and Pre-Raphaelite imagery within British interiors of the period. The intimate scale and warm character of the printed wooden surface give the panel particular decorative appeal. The reverse retains a Liberty of London label, although this has deteriorated with age. Presented in good antique condition overall, with age-related surface wear. There is some damage to the upper left corner of the panel and frame, while the Liberty label displays deterioration consistent with its age.
