Constructed from solid oak, the chest features a planked top above four generously proportioned drawers. The drawer fronts are decorated with bold geometric moulded panels, creating an architectural appearance characteristic of the period. Traditional pegged construction and rosehead nails remain visible throughout. The drawers run on side runners and are fitted with old wooden handles, although these are later replacements rather than the originals. The chest stands on sturdy stile feet and retains its original panelled back and panelled sides. An especially practical feature of the construction is that the upper section can be removed, allowing the chest to separate into two sections for easier transportation and positioning. The oak has developed a particularly attractive deep colour and natural patina through centuries of use. Presented in good antique condition for its age, the chest remains sturdy and functional. Two locks are missing, there is no key, and various historic knocks, marks and surface irregularities are present, all consistent with its considerable age and use. A characterful and increasingly scarce example of late 17th-century country furniture, combining generous storage with an impressive early oak presence.
