The substantial architectural frame is richly carved throughout, with deeply worked foliate ornament creating a dramatic Gothic Revival character. A central mirror is incorporated into the composition and surrounded by the carved oak framework, while the original brass fittings provide practical hanging space for coats and hats. Below the mirror is a useful pull-out drawer, particularly notable for its carved Green Man handle. The lower section incorporates twin compartments designed for walking sticks and umbrellas, completing the multifunctional arrangement typical of substantial Victorian entrance-hall furniture. The Green Man, traditionally represented as a human face emerging from or surrounded by foliage, has a long history within European decorative arts and architecture. The motif experienced renewed popularity during the Victorian Gothic Revival and was particularly well suited to the elaborate carved decoration found on furniture of the period.
