The glass decanter is almost entirely enclosed within its fitted rattan casing, providing both protection and insulation while giving the piece its distinctive rustic appearance. The tightly woven basketry demonstrates attractive period craftsmanship and has developed a warm, naturally aged patina. The decanter is completed by a ceramic stopper, which opens and closes correctly. Portable vessels of this type were designed for travel and outdoor entertaining and could have formed part of a larger picnic or motoring hamper. Its compact proportions and combination of glass, ceramic and woven rattan make it an appealing example of turn-of-the-century travel and picnic ware, equally suited to a collection of antique barware or as a decorative accessory. Presented in good antique condition with wear and patination appropriate to its age and historic use. A thorough clean is recommended before any intended practical use.
